Playing the Alekhine-Chatard attack variation of the French defence, white seemed to go slightly awry with his attack which allowed black to co-ordinate his pieces beautifully and launch a stunning winning combination. Clarke was confirmed the winner when his nearest challengers, Alan Byron and Walter Dehnen could only draw despite the best efforts of both players to produce a decisive result.
