Vision Statement

To promote, encourage and coordinate the growth of Junior Chess within Leicestershire with the aim of easing the transition between junior chess and the clubs of the LRCA for young players.

So Far

Since the beginning of the Autumn term 2007, many new lunchtime and after-school chess clubs have been created in Leicesterhire primary schools through the "Chess in Schools" programme.
Added to the already successful school chess clubs run by Alan Jex, Leicestershire now has a wide base of primary school players to develop.
We have reformed our county squad training – selecting players from county primary chess clubs, inviting then to weekly Saturday training sessions to expand their ability and provide the opportunity for them to represent Leicestershire in inter-county events.
One-day interschool championships for both primary and secondary schools teams in Leicestershire have been planned for the Spring term 2008 and we are already receiving a positive response from schools.
We are currently liaising with schools, the education authority and the EMBC to create online chess for schools in Leicestershire to play each other and twinned schools in Europe … WATCH THIS SPACE!
The successful primary school chess programme is being extended into secondary schools to provide a similar structure for the continuation of lunchtime and after school chess as young players move through the education system.

Leicester Junior Championship 22/10/07

A successful one-day tournament ran alongside the Atkins Congress on Saturday 22^nd Sept.

Under 9 Leicester Champion: Shivani Patel

Under 18 Leicester Champion: Alexander Ling

Nottinghamshire Grand Prix

Leicestershire Junior players are encouraged to enter this competition as Notts currently have the strongest juniors in the Midlands, especially at under 9 and under 11. We have an excellent relationship with Nottinghamshire junior chess and attend their events to assist our training.

The Grand Prix is a 3-event competition.

At the first of these the under 14 section was won by Barnaby Thomas and the runner up was Laurence Findley, both of Littlethorpe Chess Club.

We are encouraging our new primary school players to attend the next event December 8^th.

Quadrangular

On Saturday 24^th November, 3 Leicestershire teams (under 9s, under 11s and under 14s) are travelling to Northants to play against 3 other counties in a friendly as a warm-up for the zonal of EPSCA's inter-county event held in Spring 2008.
